Concept project: fictional business

Fixed prices up front and a photo before every repair

Garage Chavrot is a fictional family garage in Villeurbanne, next to Lyon. Its homepage, in French and English, is built to turn drivers who fear being overcharged into booked services, by showing prices before anyone picks up the phone.

The brief

Fair prices, but no way to show it

Garage Chavrot is an imaginary all-makes garage in Villeurbanne, open since 1987 and now run by the founder's son, Julien. In this brief, his prices are fair and his team already texts photos of worn parts, but online the garage is just a pin on a map and a phone number. Drivers who are afraid of being overcharged ring round three garages, or pay dealer prices because they think servicing anywhere else will void their warranty. The site has to show real prices, prove the no-surprises promise and let people book a slot without making a call.

Who the page is for

Drivers in Villeurbanne and east Lyon who need a service, brakes, tyres or air-con and want a price before they commit, usually on a phone after finding the garage on Google Maps. The English version is for drivers who are more at home in English than in French.

Anatomy of the page

Anatomy of a garage homepage built for bookings

The demo is only the homepage of a Local Plus site (up to 12 pages in 2 languages), shown here from top to bottom.

Garage Chavrot — Concept project: fictional business
  1. A work order, not a banner

The page opens on the garage's own repair order: the promise “We show you the part before we replace it”, a box for your number plate and the phone number. A rubber stamp on the photo shows whether the workshop is open right now, in Paris time.

  2. Four written rules

The workshop charter: the quote is the price you pay, every worn part is photographed, the loan car is free and so is a 30-point check. If the garage breaks a rule, the labour is free. Written rules with a penalty are easier to believe than words like “honest” or “trusted”.

  3. A price estimator that fills in the work order

Choose one of 4 car sizes and tick any of 6 common jobs. Prices include VAT, and a work-order ticket adds up the total, the VAT, the workshop time and when the car will be ready. One button carries the whole quote into the booking form.

  4. Every step, and the text you'd get

Five steps, from booking to the itemised invoice, sit next to a phone showing a sample text: front pads at 2 mm, €135 to replace, discs within spec and left alone. It shows the no-upsell promise at work instead of just stating it.

  5. The warranty question, answered

A dark section explains that EU law lets you service a car under warranty at an independent garage, lists the 3 conditions and quotes the regulation number. It's there to answer the worry that sends people back to the dealer.

  6. Starting prices and sample reviews

Eight more jobs get a fixed price, a “from” price or “on quote”, from €59 for diagnostics to a clutch from €690. Then come 4 reviews, each one labelled as sample content, because the business is fictional.

  7. Booking, hours and questions

A 3-step booking form (car, slot, your details) with a call button beside it for people who'd rather talk. Below: opening hours with today highlighted, the address with parking and metro details, drive times from 6 nearby areas and 8 answers to questions asked at the counter.

Why it gets calls and bookings

Five decisions built to turn visits into bookings

Prices before the phone call

Six common jobs show a price including VAT for each of 4 car sizes, and 7 more show a fixed or starting price. A driver who's worried about being overcharged gets a number first, so they can decide before speaking to anyone.

Proof instead of promises

There are no “trusted” badges. Instead, the page shows a sample text with exact measurements (pads at 2 mm against a recommended 3 mm, discs left alone at 25.4 mm) and four written rules, with free labour if one is broken.

The warranty worry, dealt with

Owners of newer cars may think only the dealer can service them. The page explains the EU rule in plain words, lists the 3 conditions, names Regulation (EU) No 461/2010, and repeats the answer in the FAQ, next to a “Price my service” button.

Type your plate once

The number plate typed at the top follows you into the quote and the booking form. It understands new plates (AB-123-CD) and old ones (1234 AB 69), flags the letters I, O and U, which new French plates never use, and has a tick box for foreign plates. On phones, the bottom bar turns into the live total with a Book button while you price.

A booking form that can't book a closed day

Three short steps, with the car size and jobs carried over when you book from a quote. Sundays and French public holidays are refused as soon as you pick them, the afternoon slot is switched off on Saturdays, and every error message says exactly what to fix.

Build notes

  • Typeface: Archivo, one self-hosted variable font used at three widths: condensed for headlines, plates and prices, regular for text and wide for the printed work-order labels. One 88 KB file covers both languages.
  • Colours: graphite like a workshop counter, white like a work order and cobalt blue like mechanics' overalls. Green and red only ever carry good or bad news, such as “within spec”, “open” or a form error.
  • No framework or page builder, just hand-written HTML, CSS and JavaScript: 55 KB of CSS and 30 KB of JavaScript, about 22 KB together once compressed. No cookies and no tracking.
  • All photos are AI-generated, saved as AVIF with WebP and JPEG fallbacks in 2 or 3 sizes, and only the first photo loads straight away. On a phone, the first screen needs 7 files and about 280 KB, font included.
  • Accessibility: a skip link, tap targets of at least 44 px, form errors tied to their fields, a price total that screen readers announce, and no animation for people who switch motion off.
  • Two languages, French and English, with prices and times written the local way: 105 € and 7 h 45 in French, €105 and 7:45am in English. The price estimator and the work-order ticket it fills in are custom extras on top of Local Plus, quoted first.
